This recipe is simple to make, and each bite offers a delightful crunch with the unique taste of okra.
Ingredients
2 cups fresh okra, finely chopped
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for a spicy kick)
1 egg, beaten
2-3 tbsp vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
Prepare the Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the chopped okra, cornmeal, flour, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Stir well to mix all the ingredients.
Add the Egg: Pour the beaten egg into the mixture and stir until everything is well-coated and holds together. If the mixture is too dry, you can add a little water, one tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the right consistency for shaping.
Form the Patties: Scoop out small portions of the mixture and shape them into patties, about 2 inches in diameter.
Fry the Patties: Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties to the skillet in batches, frying them for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
Drain and Serve: Remove the patties from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve warm, and enjoy your crispy okra patties!
Tips for Perfect Okra Patties
Use Fresh Okra: Fresh okra gives the best texture and flavor. Avoid frozen okra, as it can become too soft when thawed.
Try Different Seasonings: Add spices like cumin or smoked paprika for an extra depth of flavor.
Serve with a Dipping Sauce: These patties pair wonderfully with a side of ranch, yogurt dip, or spicy aioli for added flavor.
